DENVER – At least one Lobo is still chasing a title in each flight of the Univ. of Denver Invitational after day one action. Freshman Graeme Kassautzki, competing in Singles Flight A, freshman Chandler Brass, Singles Flight B, and the tandem of sophomore Max Jones and freshman Johnny Parkes are still going in Doubles Flight A.
Kassautzki started the day with a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2 win over Colorado’s Marko Bundalo in the Round of 32. He advanced to the Quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-1 win over teammate, sophomore Kamil Pajkowski. Pajkowski made it to the Round of 16 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Denver’s Niklas Persson.
Also in Flight A, senior Eric Conklin won his first match (6-7, 6-3, 6-4) over Arizona’s Daniel Andrus but fell 6-2, 7-5 to Utah’s Nick Coutts. Parkes topped Minnesota’s Sion Wilkins, 7-6(4), 6-3 in the Round of 32 before falling 6-3, 6-4 to Denver’s Adam Holmstrom. Jones fell in his first match, 7-6(2), 7-5 to Colorado’s Marek Dvorak.
Brass opened play in Flight B with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Air Force’s Robby Alexander and then cruised past Nebraska’s Karl Jones, 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Derek Lynch, also in Flight B, fall to Nebraska’s Ayhan Oray, 6-2, 6-2.
Jones and Parkes were the only UNM doubles team to win on day one. The duo netted an 8-5 win over Air Force’s Robby Alexander and Justin Lau.
The Lobos return to the court tomorrow with singles beginning at 8 a.m. and doubles at 3 p.m.
