ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team ended the second day of the Lobo Fall Invitational taking first in the doubles competition and advancing to the singles final round to be played Sunday, Sept. 25 at the Lobo Tennis Club.

Junior Iva Gersic made her way to the singles final round by winning a tough match against Alabama’s Ashley Bentley, 6-3,1-6, 7-6.

Lobos, Maja Kovacek and Ola Abou-Zekry will battle for fifth place after defeating Alabama’s Natalie McElveen, 6-2, 6-2 and Colorado’s Franziska Jendrian, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

In doubles action Kovacek and Gersic won the semifinals round against Northern Arizona’s Susan McClelland and Katie Schurr, 8-2 then continuing with a win against Alabama’s Robin Stephenson and Ashley Bentley, 8-3 to take first in the tournament.

Sunday will be the last day to catch the New Mexico women’s tennis team in action during their fall schedule. The final singles rounds will be played starting Sunday at 9 a.m.
