ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Senior New Mexico women’s tennis player Maja Kovacek pulled out a win yesterday in the opening qualifying round of the 8th annual ColemanVision Tennis Championships at the Tanoan Country Club in Albuquerque, N.M. She defeated No. 502 Megan Bradley 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.
Bradley attended Miami before turning professional this summer. Last spring, she held the No. 1 collegiate ranking for several weeks and was the top seed at the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
Kovacek will play again today against Tara Snyder, who is seeded fifth in the qualifying tournament and is ranked 414th in the world. If Kovacek wins two more, she will be in the singles main draw of the tournament, which begins Tuesday.
Junior Iva Gersic also competed in the opening day of the singles qualifier. She was defeated by No. 523 (world ranked) Stacia Fonseca, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
