ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico volleyball team pounded on Delaware State to open the Hilton Albuquerque Classic this afternoon. The Lobos (6-2) won game one, 30-8, setting a new record for fewest points scored by an opponent in one game.

Senior Chelsea Sondrup and freshman Michelle Miller jump-started the Lobos with a 7-2 lead, each putting down two kills. Sophomore Samie Weber built the lead to 17-5, serving nine consecutive times, recording two aces. Sophomore Kim Cox drew two service errors to push the score to 28-7 and freshman Gayle Tripp solidified the win on her serve as the Hornets committed an attack error. Overall, the Lobos forced 13 Delaware State errors in game one.

The Hornets sayed with New Mexico to start game two with the last tie coming at seven all. Freshman Sarah Kwasigroch got a kill from Sondrup, an ace and two Hornet attack errors during her serve to build a 16-9 lead. Junior Kellly Therkelsen pushed the lead to 21-12, recording two aces and a kill from Sondrup. The Lobos got four more errors out of Delaware State during Tripp’s serve for a 28-15 advantage. They got their 29th point on a DSU service error and sealed the win at 30-15 with an attack error off of Miller’s serve.

The Lobos continued to beat up on the Hornets in game three, racing to a 7-1 lead. Two Delaware State errors, two kills from Miller and one from Therkelsen pushed it to 12-4. Five kills from Weber and eight DSU errors later, the Lobos took the game 30-12. The Lobos win took exactly one hour.

For the game, Sondrup led the Lobos with 12 kills and three blocks, hitting .579 (12K-1E-19TA). Kwasigroch hit a team-high .667 (2K-0E-3TA) and dished out 34 of UNM’s 37 assists. Freshman Joelle Ingram hit .571 (4K-0E-7TA) and recorded three blocks while Weber and Miller hit .500 (8K-2E-12TA) and (9K-2E-14TA), respectively. Weber added three blocks, two service aces and six digs. Cox led the team in digs (7) and aces (4).

The Lobos take on Oral Roberts in match two of session two this evening at 7:30 p.m. Oral Roberts beat Syracuse in the opening match of session one, 3-1.
