Up Next: The No. 2 Lobos open their regular season home schedule with the 2005 TLC Plumbing and Utility Invitational this weekend at the UNM Soccer Complex. The tournament field features four teams with a combined record of 13-2-1 in 2005 and three of the teams are either ranked or receiving votes in the polls. Action starts on Friday, Sept. 16, at 5:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) when James Madison (2-1-1) takes on Butler (5-0-0) in the opening match. The Lobos (4-0-0) will then face Wisconsin (3-1-0) at 7:00 p.m. (M.D.T.). Friday night is “Stuff the Stadium” and all tickets are just $2.00. All four teams are ranked in their respective regions this week with Butler at No. 5 in the Great Lakes region. Wisconsin is eighth in the Great Lakes region while James Madison is fourth in the South Atlantic region. New Mexico holds on to its top spot in the Far West Region. Both Butler and James Madison received votes in this week’s CollegeSoccerNews.com top-30.
The Invite concludes on Sunday, Sept. 18, with Wisconsin facing Butler at 10:30 a.m. (M.D.T.) followed by the Lobos’ match with JMU at 1:00 p.m. (M.D.T.). New Mexico has won 11 straight games at the UNM Soccer Complex and has not lost at home since dropping a 2-0 decision to UNLV on October 18, 2003 – the only game head coach Jeremy Fishbein has lost at home in his tenure at UNM.

Notes: The Dukes defeated Penn State 2-1, one week after the Lobos dropped the Nittany Lions, 2-0 in the season opener. JMU was ranked 18th in the CollegeSoccerNews.com preseason top-30, but fell out of the rankings after losing to Bucknell and tying Tulsa. Their other win was a 1-0 shutout of Virginia Tech.

Recapping the Radisson Hotel classic: The Lobos won a pair of away games over Big East teams last weekend on their way to taking the Ohio State Classic. UNM defeated south Florida, 3-2, and West Virginia, 2-0, at SMU. Senior Jeff Rowland scored a pair of goals in two games while junior Andrew Boyens added a goal and an assist, earning Classic MVP honors. Seniors Ben Ashwill, Josh Brown and Matt Wootton joined Rowland and Boyens on the All-Tournament team.
Tough At Home: The Lobos have won 11-straight games at the UNM Soccer Complex and have just one loss at home in head coach Jeremy Fishbein’s tenure. UNM’s last home loss was a 2-0 defeat to UNLV on October 18, 2003. Fishbein has posted an amazing 23-1-2 record in three seasons at the UNM Soccer Complex, including a 1-0 defeat of top-ranked Indiana on Sept. 19, 2004. The crowd has played a big part in New Mexico’s home field success. Last season, UNM averaged 2,379 fans per game, the second-highest attendance in the NCAA in 2004.
Lobos in the Rankings: New Mexico was a consensus top-10 pick in the preseason rankings. They are ranked second in this week’s CollegeSoccerNews.com Top-30 and Soccer Times Top-25, third in the NSCAA top-25 and .

NCAA Statistical Rankings: Senior Jeff Rowland’s 10 points and five goals both rank in the top-20 in the NCAA. He is tied for 16th in points-per-game with a 2.50 average. He is tied for sixth in goals per game, averaging 1.25. As a team, the Lobos’ three shutouts are tied for second in the nation.
Unbeaten and Untied: New Mexico has posted a 4-0-0 record over the first two weeks of the season. The Lobos are one of 15 teams in the nation to remain unbeaten and untied on the season.
Boyens Takes Home Weekly Honor: Junior defender Andrew Boyens earned a spot on CollegeSoccerNews.com’s National Team of the Week after his MVP performance at the Radisson Hotel Classic last weekend. Boyens led UNM to its third shutout and scored a goal and an assist in two wins over the weekend. It is Boyens’ first career national team of the week recognition.
Unbeaten Streak Continues: New Mexico has not lost a match since falling to Denver, 2-0, last season – a streak that extends over 13 games. This is their longest undefeated streak in school history and includes a record of 11-0-2.
Rowland on the Hermann Watch List: Lobo senior forward Jeff Rowland has been named to the 2005 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. Rowland is one of 25 players up for college soccer’s top award. He is coming off a record breaking season in 2004 after scoring 45 points on 19 goals and seven assists and is a consensus preseason All-American selection. So far this season he has scored five goals in four games.
Keeping the Momentum: UNM is coming off one of the most successful campaigns in school history. The Lobos finished the 2004 regular season ranked No. 1 in Soccer America’s Top-25, posted a 17-1-2 record and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time. UNM has not lost a match since falling to Denver 2-1, on October 17, 2004, a span of 13 games.

Rowland and Watson Climbing the All-Time Lists: Seniors Lance Watson and Jeff Rowland and putting their names on UNM’s all-time lists in scoring, goals, assists and shots. Rowland currently ranks fourth in points (78), fourth in goals (34) and third in shots (156). Watson is currently seventh in points (56), tied for sixth in goals (20), eighth in assists (16) and fifth in shots (142). Senior Ben Ashwill is also 10th in career goals with 18.
Barklage a Freshman to Watch: Freshman Brandon Barklage was named one of the Top-100 Freshmen to Watch by CollegeSoccerNews.com. The 5-11, midfielder/forward from St. Louis, Mo., has started all four games and recorded an assist.
