Lobo men’s soccer junior defender Andrew Boyens earned a spot on the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team of the Week following his MVP performance in the Radisson Hotel Classic in Dallas, Texas, last weekend. Boyens led the Lobos to wins over Big East foes South Florida and West Virginia in two games at SMU.

Boyens, the 2004 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-Player of the Year, scored his first career assist in New Mexico’s 3-2 win over USF on Friday. He added the go-ahead goal in the Lobos’ 2-0 win over the Mountaineers on Sunday and played excellent defense in New Mexico’s third shutout of the season. This is Boyens’ first national team of the week honor, despite the fact that he was also last year’s MPSF Newcomer of the Year.

The Lobos are off to a 4-0-0 start for the third time in four years and are riding a school-record 13-game unbeaten streak. Their last loss came at Denver, 2-0, on October 17, 2004. UNM has moved up to No. 2 in this week’s CollegeSoccerNews.com Top-30.

UNM returns to Albuquerque next weekend for their much-anticipated home opener against Wisconsin (3-1-0). The Lobos face the Badgers on Friday, Sept. 16, at 7:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) in the opening night of the NIKE/TLC Plumbing and Utility Invitational. The Wisconsin game is “Stuff the Stadium” night at the UNM Soccer Complex and all tickets are just $2.00. New Mexico has won 11 straight games at the UNM Soccer Complex and has not lost at home since dropping a 2-0 decision to UNLV on October 18, 2003 – the only game head coach Jeremy Fishbein has lost at home in his tenure at UNM. Butler (4-0-0) and James Madison (2-1-1) kick off the tournament at 5:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) in the neutral game.
