The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is in second place after two rounds of the Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic being played at the Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo. The Lobos carded a 36-hole score of 6-over-par 582 and trail Baylor by 18 shots heading into Tuesday’s final round. Fresno State and host Colorado State are tied for third at 585. This is UNM’s first tournament of the 2005-06 season.

New Mexico shot a 5-over 293 in the first round and followed that with a 1-over 289 in the afternoon. Baylor, just one under after the first 18 holes, blazed through the second round at 11-under 277.

The Lobos were led by a pair of freshmen playing in their first collegiate tournament. Swedish natives Mikaela Backstedt and Py Bengtsson each finished at even-par 144 after 36 holes, good for a tie for 10th place. Bengtsson had UNM’s low round of the day, carding a 3-under 69 in the afternoon.

Junior Ashley Rollins is tied for 13th at 1-over 145, followed by sophomore Alexandra Phelps (149, +5, T25th) and sophomore Giselle Claux (153, +9, T40th).

The final round begins tomorrow with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
