LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State spoiled the Lobo volleyball team’s season opener Monday night, sweeping New Mexico 30-25, 30-23, 30-26 before a crowd of 3,183 at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces. Senior Chelsea Sondrup recorded a match-high five blocks, moving her within two of a tie for second on the UNM all-time career record list for blocks. Sondrup, with 318, needs nine to set the new record.
Freshman Sarah Kwasigroch was solid in her first collegiate match for UNM. Kwasigroch hit .500 (3K-1E-4TA) with 26 assists and six digs. Junior Jennifer Heasty led the Lobos in kills, putting down 11, while sophomore Kim Cox paced UNM with eight digs.
Tanya Allen led the Aggies with 13 kills while Kim Oguh and Alice Borden added 11 apiece. Jackie Choi had all 39 assists for NMSU while Jordan Bostic (13) and Briana Akrie (10) combined for 23 of the team’s 45 digs.
The Lobos return to the court on Friday, hosting the Comcast Lobo Tournament. UNM takes on Northern Arizona at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, Lamar on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., and Villanova at 7:30 p.m.
