University of New Mexico men’s golfer Jay Choi ended his run in the 105th U.S. Amateur today, dropping his third round match on the 19th hole to Anthony Kim. Choi only trailed for two holes the entire match and was up one hole through the 15th, but could not hold on to the lead.
Kim, a junior at Oklahoma and 2005 Big 12 Player of the Year, took an early lead with a par on the opening hole. Choi birdied the second to even the match and went 1up on the third with a par of his own. Kim evened the match on the sixth when Choi double-boogied the 487-yard par-4. However, Choi came right back on the eighth with a birdie for a 1up lead that he held on to for the front nine.
Chio seemed to take command on the back, going 2up with a par at No. 11. Kim fought back, taking both the 12th and 13th holes, but he conceded the 15th after hitting two errant tee shots. The match was all-square again following Choi’s boogey at No. 16, and stayed even through the 18th. Kim ended the match in the first playoff hole with a birdie at No. 1.
