Beljan Leads First Round of US Amateur Stroke Play

Ardmore, Pa. – Three members and one former member of the New Mexico Lobo men’s golf team played their opening round at the 105th U.S. Amateur today. Senior Jay Choi and junior Charlie Beljan played the par-70, 6,967 yard Philadelphia Country Club Course, while redshirt freshman Darrin Hall and former Lobo Jay Reynolds played the par-70, 6,846 yard Merion Golf Club East Course (match play course).

Beljan is the current overall leader after one round of play. Beljan carded a 6-under par 64 and is four strokes ahead of a group in second. Choi is right behind Beljan in a tie for second place after a 2-under par round of 68. Other UNM results are Reynolds is tied for 193rd at 8-over par (78) and Hall is tied for 252nd at 11-over par (81).

The U.S. Amateur continues tomorrow with the final 18-holes of stroke play. The 311 golfers will then be cut to 64 following tomorrow’s round. The remaining 64 players will be bracketed and the individuals will play a match-play format, with the final two playing on Sunday, August 28.
