The University of New Mexico football team provided a sneak preview of its new Nike uniforms today. The Lobos will officially unveil their new uniforms in front of an ESPN2 national television audience on Monday, Sept. 5 when the team hosts UNLV in the 2005 season-opener at University Stadium.

While the re-design features state-of-the-art Nike material and subtle changes in the striping along the jersey sleeves and pant legs, UNM football equipment manager Jacque May was careful to maintain the traditional New Mexico cherry and silver identity when developing the uniform concept.

For the third straight year, the Lobos will continue to wear cherry jersey and pants at home and white jerseys with silver pants on the road. The home jersey will feature white numbers, a UNM insignia on the collar, silver striping on shoulder and piping around the upper chest and back. The home pants will have wide silver striping on the hips and silver piping running down the side to the knee. The word “Lobos” will appear just above the numbers on the front of the jersey.

The road uniforms will have the same design concept, except with cherry numbers, striping and piping on the jersey and pants. The UNM insignia will remain on the collar and the word “New Mexico” will be appear above the front jersey numbers. The Lobo logo and silver helmet design will remain the same for both the home and road uniforms.

New Mexico has compiled a 15-10 record, including 10-4 in the Mountain West Conference, over the past two years since donning the distinct cherry and silver uniforms at home and on the road. UNM wore various combinations of cherry and white during head coach Rocky Long’s first five seasons.
