Former University of New Mexico men’s soccer goalkeeper Andrew Weber signed with D.C. United of Major League Soccer on Friday. Weber, a 2004 graduate from UNM, becomes the first Lobo to make an MLS roster under head coach Jeremy Fishbein.
D.C. United announced Friday the team signed Weber to the developmental roster. The Phoenix, Ariz. Native, obtained through waivers, joins United after a week-long trial with the team and an impressive collegiate career at New Mexico.
“Andrew is a solid, young goalkeeper who we think has great potential in our league,” said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. “We are happy to have concluded this signing.”
Weber, 22, a three-time all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and two-time all-region honoree, holds New Mexico’s career records for games played (83), minutes played (7,681), wins (50), saves (350), and shutouts (25). In 2004, his final season as a Lobo, he recorded nine shutouts, posted a 17-1-2 record and maintained a goals against average of 0.55, the lowest in school history.
“We are extremely excited for Andrew,” stated Fishbein. “He is very deserving and has the ability to make a career out of playing professional soccer for a long time. He is playing behind a very experienced keeper in Nick Rimando and has a chance to battle for the back-up position. He is in a great situation with excellent coaches and a quality organization. We certainly wish him the best of luck”
Weber’s former teammate, Jeff Krause, is currently on the Colorado Rapids’ reserve team. Three other former Lobos have played in the MLS over the years. Richard Farrer, a 1992 graduate of UNM, spent seven seasons with the Dallas Burn, while Edmundo Rodriquez, also a 1992 graduate, played with NY/NJ MetroStars and the Kansas City Wizards. Justin Sells finished his Lobo career in 1997 and is still New Mexico’s all-time leading scorer, played with the San Jose Clash.
