OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The University of New Mexico men’s golf team moved up seven spots to finish fifth at the NCAA Championships. The fifth place finish is the best finish since a fifth place finish in 1979. The Lobos shot a final round 2-under par 278 on the par 70, 7,131 yard Caves Valley Golf Course in Owings Mills, Md. and finished the tournament at 38-over par (289-300-291-278=1158). The NCAA Championship went to Georgia at 15-over par winning by 11-strokes over Georgia Tech.

Individually the Lobos were led in the final round by senior Madalitso Muthiya and junior Jay Choi who both shot 1-under par 69’s. Both Muthiya (75-74-72-69=290) and Choi (73-75-73-69=290) finshed the tournament tied for 27th at 10-over par. Other Lobo results were junior Spencer Levin tied for 21st at 8-over par (72-75-71-70=288), junior Mark Anderson tied for 65th at 21-over par (73-83-75-70=301) and senior Miguel Griego tied for 67th at 22-over par (71-76-77-78=302).

The individual championshp went to a playoff between Michael Putnam of Pepperdine and James Lepp of Washington who both finished at 4-under par.
