ATHENS, GA.- University of New Mexico women’s tennis player Maja Kovacek passed her first test today at the NCAA Women’s Singles Championship in Athens, Ga. as she defeated Central Region competitor Iryna Tkachenko of Oklahoma State, 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of 64. Kovacek advances to the round of 32 tomorrow where she will play the winner of the match between No. 9-16 seed Story Tweedie Yates of TCU and USC’s Anca Anastasi. The match between Yates and Anastasi is scheduled to be played today at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Kovacek will have a busy day tomorrow as she will also be joining teammate Iva Gersic in the first round of the doubles championship. The duo is scheduled to face the No. 4 seed UCLA team of Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda at 3 p.m. ET. Last year, Bercek was part of the doubles team that won the entire NCAA championship.
