COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sophomore left-hander Danny Ray Herrera has been named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Herrera was brilliant last Friday at BYU in helping the Lobos to a 4-1 victory in Provo. The Odessa, Texas, native pitched his second complete game of the season and only allowed three hits in earning his sixth win of the season. Herrera (6-4) threw a no hitter the first 6 1/3 innings before the Cougars broke up the bid with a double in the bottom of the seventh. He also struck out a season-high eight batters in keeping one of the top offenses in the nation in check with just one earned run. This marks the first pitcher of the week honor for Herrera in his young career.
The New Mexico baseball team returns to action for its last home series of the season May 12-14 vs. San Diego State at Isotopes Park.
