PROVO, Utah – Sophomore lefty Danny Ray Herrera threw a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings and pitched his second complete game of the season to get the New Mexico baseball team back on the winning track as the Lobos topped BYU, 4-1, Friday night at Larry H. Miller Field. Herrera was masterful in winning his sixth game of the season, striking out a season-high eight while only allowing three hits and one run. The two teams will meet for the rubber match of the series Saturday at 1 p.m.; live stats and an audio webcast will be available at www.BYUCougars.com.
The Lobos (20-27, 10-13 Mountain West) led the entire game, starting off with a Ryan Barba RBI single in the second. Barba went 3-for-4 in the contest.
UNM added to its lead with two runs in the fifth to go up 3-0. Barba led off with a double, and scored on a Jordan Pacheco run-scoring triple. Pacheco scored on the same play as he rounded third on a throwing error by BYU second baseman Brandon Relf.
While New Mexico was building its lead, Herrera was busy working on a no-hit bid. The southpaw, who went perfect in six innings last year at home vs. BYU, didn’t allow a hit until Jeff Heistand connected on a double with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Heistand later scored on a wild pitch, but it was all the Cougars would get against Herrera.
Daniel Stovall blasted his seventh homer of the year, a solo shot to lead off the eighth, to get the run back and put the Lobos back up 4-1.
Herrera (6-4) retired the last five batters of the game to close out the Cougars (33-14-1, 17-6 Mountain West).
Pacheco and Garrick Haymore each collected two hits for UNM, who outhit BYU, 11-3.
