SAN DIEGO, CALIF.- Even a minor rain delay was not enough to throw the No. 2 seeded University of New Mexico women’s tennis team off its game today as it went on to defeat No. 7 seed Wyoming 4-0 in the first round of the Mountain West Conference tournament at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. The Lobos swept the doubles point and earned three quick wins at No. 1, 2 and 5 singles for the victory.
MWC Co-Players of the Year Maja Kovacek and Iva Gersic led the squad with a victory at No. 1 doubles. The all-MWC doubles team of Michelle Heidbrink and Tiffany Robertson followed at the No. 2 spot with an 8-2 win over Wyoming’s Corina Lazar and Amy Senko, and rounding out the Lobos’ total domination in doubles was sophomore Nora Quintal and freshman Lucy Scott with another confident 8-2 win.
Overall, the Lobos seemed to coast through the match against Wyoming as the three singles matches that were completed were won in two sets each. No. 1 Kovacek, No. 2 Gersic and No. 5 Scott captured the three wins for New Mexico.
A bigger challenge awaits the Lobos tomorrow as they will face No. 3 seed UNLV in the semifinal round at 11 a.m. (MST). During the regular season, New Mexico defeated UNLV 4-3. Be sure to check www.themwc.com for live results of the match and www.golobos.com for the match recap.
