SUNRIVER, Ore. — The 14th-ranked New Mexico women’s golf team, looking for its fifth MWC title in six years, is in second place after one round of competition at the Mountain West Championships held at the par-71, 6,312-yard Meadow Course. The Lobos carded a 16-over 300 as a team, five strokes behind 25th-ranked and defending champion UNLV, who shot an 11-over 295. Round two will continue Friday morning; live stats of the tournament are available at www.GolfStat.com.

Individually, senior Christina Spence and junior Christine Fernandez are both tied for third with a 1-over 72. Spence and Fernandez each had two birdies on the day.

UNLV’s Elena Kurokawa paces the field with a 2-under 69.

Senior Kailin Downs and sophomore Ashley Rollins also posted the same score, a 7-over 78, to sit in a tie for 14th.

New Mexico’s fifth starter, Giselle Claux, shot a 9-over 80 and is in a tie for 20th.
