LOBOS BEGIN SECOND HALF OF MWC SCHEDULE AGAINST UNLV: The conference race heats up in the desert this weekend as the third-place New Mexico baseball team takes on second-place UNLV in a crucial three-game series at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas. The Lobos begin the second half of the conference run with a 9-6 mark, three games behind league-leader BYU (12-3) and two games behind UNLV (11-4). UNM will look to gain ground on the Rebels in Vegas for the ever-important No. 2 spot in the standings. The top two teams in the league receive first-round byes in the conference tournament May 25-28 in Salt Lake City.

The series gets underway Friday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. MT. Saturday’s game is set for 3 p.m. MT and Sunday’s first pitch is at 2 p.m. MT.

In a competitive series earlier this season (March 24-26) at Isotopes Park, UNLV took two of three games from the Lobos. New Mexico opened the series with a 10-8 victory, but fell 12-6 in the second game and 14-9 in the third game.

The Lobos enter the weekend with a 19-19 overall record after falling to No. 5 Arizona, 14-3, Tuesday night at Isotopes Park. The Wildcats (27-11) pounded out 18 hits and six homers and limited the Lobos to eight hits. Arizona won the season series, 4-0.

UNLV, which did not play a mid-week game, is 17-22 on the season. The Rebels claimed two of three from Utah last weekend in Salt Lake City.

GET OUT THOSE BINOCULARS – LOBOS TO WATCH

• Sophomore first baseman Daniel Stovall is looking to top his sensational freshman campaign that landed him spots on the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America and All-Mountain West teams. He is currently one of 126 players on the Wallace Watch Award list, which is given out to college baseball’s top player. He was also named Baseball America’s preseason Mountain West Player of the Year. Stovall hit .347 with 12 homers, 14 doubles and 34 RBI last year. Stovall is certainly avoiding the sophomore jinx, as he’s improving in every offensive category this season – he’s batting .384 with six homers, 43 RBI and 13 doubles.

• Freshman Jordan Pacheco, who led Albuquerque’s La Cueva High School to back-to-back state championships, is making a nice transition to Division I collegiate baseball. The second baseman leads the Mountain West in batting (.408) and hits (64). He also ranks among the Mountain West leaders in slugging (.694), on-base percentage (.453), runs (42), homers (eight) and triples (four). Pacheco had a 19-game hitting streak earlier this season. Last week, he hit .529 (9-for-17) with seven runs, three doubles a homer and six RBI.

• Sophomore DH/outfielder Chris Carlson is one of the top sluggers in the Mountain West – he leads the league in runs (45), doubles (16) and walks (28). He also ranks among the top five in the MWC in RBI (46), slugging (.696) and on-base percentage (.472), while batting .370 with seven homers.

• Senior outfielder Garrick Haymore is second on the team with a .386 batting average and is fifth in the Mountain West with a .444 average in conference games. He hit three triples against Air Force – he leads the nation with nine for the season – and hit .529 (9-for17) with eight RBI in four games last week.

• Catcher Jeff Grady leads the team with nine dingers, including a monster grand slam that hit the top of the scoreboard in left-center field at Isotopes Park March 25 vs. UNLV. Grady has hit the scoreboard twice this season and has also hit two grand slams. He collected his second multi-homer game of the season April 17 vs. Air Force.

• Freshman Ian Hollick played his way into the lineup earlier in the season, and is now the starting third baseman for the Lobos. Hollick is batting .351 with four triples, two homers and 19 RBI.

• Centerfielder Matt Foote led the Lobos with a .533 batting average last week (8-for-15) with six runs, a triple, a homer and three RBI. Foote is batting .272 with two homers and 25 RBI.

• Get out the brooms – the Lobos have five three-game series sweeps this season (New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Savannah State, Utah, Air Force), the most since the 2000 season, when the regular season champs got out the brooms six times.
