ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico baseball team earned its fifth series sweep of the season by taking both games of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon over Air Force at Isotopes Park. The Lobos won game one, 18-7, and claimed game two, 12-6. UNM improves to 19-18 overall, and sits in third place in the Mountain West standings with a 9-6 league record, three games behind BYU.
New Mexico pounded the Falcons (5-26, 0-12 MWC) for 30 runs and 39 hits in the doubleheader. Jordan Pacheco went 6-for-10 with five runs and four RBI for the day, while Jeff Grady tallied seven RBI, four runs and four hits, including two homers in the second game. Garrick Haymore nailed three triples and went 4-for-9 with four RBI for the afternoon and Matt Foote scored four times and produced three hits.
The Lobos collected a season-high 24 hits in the first game, including a career-high four off the bat of Jay Russell. Pacheco drove in four runs and went 3-for-4 with two doubles, and Daniel Stovall also had four hits and two RBI.
UNM, which has won 16 straight over the Academy, jumped out to a 7-0 lead after four innings. Chris Carlson hit his seventh homer of the season in the fourth, a two-run shot, and went 2-for-4 with two runs in the game.
Air Force scored three in the top of the fifth, but the Lobos broke the game open with seven in the bottom half of the sixth to go up 15-3. Tim Grady, Jeff Grady, Nick Carlson, Pacheco, Haymore and Stovall all had RBI hits in the inning for UNM.
Ian Hollick completed the scoring for the Lobos with a pinch-hit three-run homer in the eighth. Hollick also had a nice game at the plate in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Danny Ray Herrera (5-2) allowed four runs, three earned, and six hits while striking out four in seven innings of work to pick up the win for UNM.
The Lobos found themselves in trouble early in the second game as Air Force raced out to a 5-0 lead after an inning and a half.
After the initial deficit, the Lobo offense started to roll, scoring runs in the second through sixth innings to take a commanding 12-6 lead after six.
Jeff Grady delivered his second multi-homer game of the season with a two-run shot to left in the second and a two-run blast to right-center in the fifth. He also blasted two dingers against Northern Colorado on March 5.
Pacheco had three more hits and scored three times in the second game, while Haymore hit two triples.
Darren Coltrinari (6-2) won his sixth game of the season, scattering nine hits and six runs in 6.1 innings.
The Lobos return to action Tuesday, April 19 to face No. 6 Arizona at 6 p.m. at Isotopes Park. Please note that the original game time was set for 5 p.m.
