SAN DIEGO – The New Mexico baseball team (16-17, 6-6 Mountain West) used the long ball to salvage the final game of the series and defeat San Diego State, 6-4, Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. UNM scored all six of its runs on three homers. Darren Coltrinari picked up his fifth win of the year by pitching 8.1 innings, allowing just four runs and striking out five.
San Diego State (9-21, 4-5 MWC) went up 2-0 with single runs in the first and second innings. The Lobos tied it in the third as Jeff Grady blasted his seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot. UNM took the lead 3-2 as
Chris Carlson hit a solo homer, his sixth of the season, in the fourth.New Mexico continued to take advantage of the long ball as Garrick Haymore smashed a three-run homer in the fifth, giving the Lobos a 6-2 advantage.
The Aztecs cut the lead to 6-4 with two runs in the sixth.
Coltrinari lasted until the ninth, and was relieved in favor of Petr Pacas with one out and runners on first and second. Pacas earned his second save of the year by striking out Lance Zawadzki and getting Tim O’Brien to fly out to center field.
Ben Coon (1-2) took the loss for SDSU, giving up six runs on five hits in five innings of action.
The Lobos return to action with a single game at New Mexico State Tuesday, April 12 at 6 p.m.
