Colorado Springs, Colo. – The No. 41 University of New Mexico women’s tennis team left little chance for Utah to capture a victory today in Colorado Springs, Colo. as the Lobos won at all three doubles and six singles positions for a 7-0 sweep over the Utes. New Mexico improves to 13-8 on the season and 5-1 in the Mountain West Conference.
Junior Maja Kovacek broke the all-time UNM women’s tennis record of 84 career doubles wins with her victory at No. 1 doubles today. Kovacek is now the top holder in the UNM record book with 85 career doubles wins. Senior Michelle Heidbrink earned the second spot on the career doubles list after winning her doubles match at the No. 2 position in the match against Utah. She currently has 84 career doubles wins to her name.
In singles, No. 69 Iva Gersic led the pack with a dominant performance at the top position as she defeated Utah’s Emily Kwok 6-3, 6-0. Gersic is the only Lobo player to remain undefeated in MWC play in singles and doubles this season.
The Lobos return home this Saturday, April 16 for their last home and regular MWC match of the season as they meet Air Force at the Lobo Tennis Club. April 16 is also Senior Day for Heidbrink and senior Tiffany Robertson. The match will mark their last home event as Lobo players. Match time is set for 11 a.m. (MST).
