SALT LAKE CITY – The New Mexico baseball team completed a series sweep over Utah with a dominating 12-3 victory over the Utes Sunday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. For the third consecutive game, a Lobo pitcher hurled a complete game. This time it was Darren Coltrinari’s turn, as he only allowed three runs on eight hits in picking up his fourth win of the season. Coltrinari (4-2) struck out five and walked just one in pitching his first career complete game.
The Lobos (15-15, 5-4 Mountain West) gave Coltrinari plenty of run support, running out to an 11-0 lead in the first four innings. UNM scored four in the first, led by RBI singles by Ian Hollick and Chris Dabbs, and three in the second on run-scoring singles by Daniel Stovall and once again Hollick and Dabbs. The Lobos chased Ute starter Byrce Freed (1-3) in the second, as he gave up seven runs and five hits in just 1.2 innings of work. Hollick was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Dabbs finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.
New Mexico scored three more in the third on a Garrick Haymore two-run triple and a Ute error. Haymore went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the game.
The Lobos completed their scoring barrage with another unearned run in the fourth.
Utah (7-19, 1-8 MWC) scored its three runs in the seventh on three hits.
Jordan Pacheco hit his team-leading seventh homer of the year with a solo blast in the ninth.
New Mexico returns to action Tuesday, April 5 with an exhibition game against the Albuquerque Isotopes at Isotopes Park, with first pitch at 6:05 p.m. All tickets are only $5, with all net proceeds benefiting UNM athletics.
