Colorado Springs, Colo.- Junior Maja Kovacek was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week the league office announced today. It is the second time a New Mexico women’s tennis player has received the award this season.
Kovacek helped the University of New Mexico women’s tennis team capture two conference wins over higher ranked San Diego State and UNLV last weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. The Pula, Croatia native won all four of her matches, including an upset over UNLV’s No. 22 Elena Gantcheva at the No. 1 singles position. Kovacek, who is currently ranked No. 61 individually, also won her match against her SDSU opponent and won both doubles matches with teammate Iva Gersic. The UNM duo is ranked 8th in the nation.
With the wins over No. 33 SDSU and No. 35 UNLV, New Mexico advanced from a No. 48 ranking to No. 37 according to this week’s ITA polls.
