BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — The No. 13 New Mexico women’s golf team won its second tournament championship of the 2004-05 season by claiming the Gamecock Classic Sunday afternoon at the par-72, 5,966-yard University Club Golf Course. The Lobos won the tournament, which was hosted by South Carolina, by 10 shots over No. 20 Furman. UNM was 66-over par (308-313-309–930) for the tournament. The Lobos were also victorious at the Landfall Tradition in October.
Senior Kailin Downs placed second by carding an 11-over 227 (75-73-79). She has now placed in the top five on 15 occasions during her career.
Senior Christina Spence tied for sixth with a 19-over 235 (78-81-76), marking the top finish of the season for the Port Alberni, British Columbia native.
Freshman Alexandra Phelps also had an impressive showing, placing ninth with a 77-79-80–236 (+20).
Junior Christine Fernandez tied for 24th with a 24-over 240 (78-88-74), and sophomore Ashley Rollins tied for 46th with a 33-over 249 (82-80-87).
The New Mexico women’s golf team returns to action for the Ping/Arizona State Invitational April 1-3 in Tempe.
