LOBOS HOST SAVANNAH STATE THIS WEEKEND: The New Mexico baseball team hosts Savannah State for a three-game series this weekend (March 11-13) at Isotopes Park. The Lobos and Tigers meet Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m. (please note that this is a time change from the original 1 p.m. start). Friday and Saturday’s games will be broadcast at GoLobos.com, and Sunday’s game will be available on KDEF 1150 AM as well as GoLobos.com. Live stats of every game via Gametracker will be available at GoLobos.com.

The Lobos are looking to bounce back from a tough 11-5 loss Tuesday night to New Mexico Highlands. The Cowboys (12-6), ranked seventh in their region, got up on the Lobos early with a 4-1 lead in the top of the third, and went on to collect 14 hits in the six-run victory.

The Lobos have been a streaky team to start the season. UNM lost its first four games on the road, came home to sweep New Mexico State, then lost four in a row once again to Texas State, Nebraska and Western Carolina. The team bounced back at home with a commanding three-game sweep over Northern Colorado last weekend before falling to Highlands.

Savannah State, a Division I independent school, comes to Albuquerque ranked first in the Black College Baseball Poll with a 12-5 record. The Tigers split a doubleheader with Florida A&M in their last action on March 4.

HISTORY LESSON – LOBOS-TIGERS 101

• This is the first meeting between the two schools.

Jeff Grady NAMED MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

After helping the New Mexico baseball team sweep past Northern Colorado last weekend at Isotopes Park, catcher Jeff Grady was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week. It marks the first time Grady has earned the honor. Grady was also named to the College Baseball Foundation weekly honor roll for his performance against UNC.

The senior co-captain picked a perfect time to get hot at the plate for UNM, turning the Lobos’ four-game losing streak into a three-game winning streak. Although he didn’t see action on Friday, Grady made the most of his opportunity in Saturday’s doubleheader. In the first game, Grady went 3-for-4 with two homers, two runs and three RBI. In the third inning, Grady nailed a fastball over the center field fence for his first dinger of the season. In the fifth, he topped his first shot, belting a towering blast off the top of the scoreboard in left field (approximately 450 ft.). He also hit a run-scoring single in the sixth.

He followed that effort with a 1-for-3 performance in game two. He hit a three-run homer over the left-field wall in the second inning, giving the Lobos a 4-0 lead. For the week, Grady collected four hits, three homers, three runs and six RBI in just seven at-bats.

WEEKEND RECAP: LOBOS SWEEP NORTHERN COLORADO

The Lobos swept Northern Colorado in three games last weekend at Isotopes Park.

New Mexico claimed the first game of the series over Northern Colorado, 11-6, Friday, March 4. Freshman third baseman Ian Hollick went 4-for-4 in the game and Jason Fernandez earned his team-leading third victory of the season on the mound.

The two teams played a doubleheader on Saturday, moving Sunday’s scheduled game up to Saturday due to rainy conditions in the Albuquerque area. UNM dominated the first half of game one, building an 11-0 lead before the Bears came storming back with seven runs in the top of the seventh. The Lobos held on for the 11-8 victory with help from senior catcher Jeff Grady, who went 3-for-4 in the game with two homers and three RBI.

UNM jumped out in front again in game two, scoring four in the second inning, keyed by a three-run blast by Jeff Grady. The Bears tied the game at 5 in the fifth, but Chris Carlson hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning and Chad Itokazu answered with a two-run homer in the seventh to give New Mexico the 9-5 win.

THE ESSENTIALS: CLIFF NOTES FROM THE NORTHERN COLORADO SERIES

• The Lobos picked up their second sweep of the young season by taking three from Northern Colorado last weekend (March 4-5) at Isotopes Park. UNM won game one on Friday, March 4, 11-6, and swept a doubleheader on Saturday, March 5, 11-8 and 9-5.

• UNM hit .361 in the three games with 31 runs scored and seven homers

• Jeff Grady went 4-for-7 in Saturday’s doubleheader with three homers and six RBI. He collected the first multi-homer game of his career with two dingers in game one. His second homer in game one hit the top of the main scoreboard in left field, approximately a 450-foot blast. He hit a three-run homer in game two. For his performance, Grady was named to the College Baseball Foundation Honor Roll for the week of March 7.

• Chris Carlson went 6-for-12 at the plate with a double, a triple, a homer and seven RBI. Carlson hit a two-run homer to give UNM the lead for good in game two’s 9-5 victory.

• Jason Fernandez won his team-best third game of the season in Friday’s win. Fernandez struck out nine in 6.2 innings of work. He has struck out 19 in his last two games.

• Ian Hollick went 4-for-4 with his first career homer on Friday. He collected six hits in 12 at-bats in the three games and was perfect from third base with six assists and one putout.

• Danny Ray Herrera, in his first start of the season, didn’t allow a run and struck out six in 6.0 innings of work in Saturday’s game one win to earn his first victory of 2005. Herrera retired 11 consecutive batters before he exited the game with an 11-0 lead.

• Tim Grady, in his first action of the season, tallied two hits, including a homer, in two starts at designated hitter.

• Chad Itokazu went 4-for-9 with five runs in two starts at second base on Saturday. Itokazu hit a two-run blast – his second of the season – in game two’s 9-5 triumph.

• With the Lobos leading 7-5 going into the top of the sixth in game two on Saturday, Karsten Gaarder relieved Darren Coltrinari and went on to pitch four scoreless innings in earning the save. Gaarder fanned seven and didn’t walk a batter.

GET OUT THOSE BINOCULARS – LOBOS TO WATCH

• Sophomore first baseman Daniel Stovall is looking to top his sensational freshman campaign that landed him spots on the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America and All-Mountain West teams. He is currently one of 55 players on the Wallace Watch Award list, which is given out to college baseball’s top player. He was also named Baseball America’s preseason Mountain West Player of the Year. Stovall hit .347 with 12 homers, 14 doubles and 34 RBI last year. Thus far, he’s living up to his preseason billing – he’s batting .394 with two homers, 22 RBI, seven doubles, 26 hits and 14 runs scored.

• Freshman Jordan Pacheco, who led Albuquerque’s La Cueva High School to back-to-back state championships, is making a nice transition to Division I collegiate baseball. The second baseman is third on the team with a .400 batting average and is second in hits (22). Pacheco has hit safely in his last 12 games.
