BOULDER COLO.- It was a long day for the No. 31 University of New Mexico women’s tennis team as it went up against No. 54 Colorado Sunday afternoon at the Ranch Country Club in Boulder Colo. With only four indoor courts available for play, the match, which started at 2 p.m., lasted well into the late evening, but the Lobos (6-6) endured the long hours and came close to sweeping the Buffaloes (6-5) with a 6-1 victory.
In doubles competition, New Mexico dominated at the No. 1 and 2 spots to earn the coveted point. At No. 1 doubles, the No. 5 duo of Maja Kovacek and Iva Gersic cruised past Colorado’s 49th ranked pair of Kendra Strandemo and Jessica Vanderdys, 8-3 while the UNM senior tandem of Michelle Heidbrink and Tiffany Robertson controlled the No. 2 position with a convincing 8-2 win over Martina Sedivec and Veera Nurmi.
UNM went on to take five of six singles matches to drive home the victory over Colorado. No. 35 Kovacek defeated Strandemo at the top spot, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 while Gersic cleaned up at the No. 2 position, defeating Lynzee Kever, 6-3, 6-4. Heidbrink took on Vanderdys at No. 3 singles and won 7-5, 7-5 and at No. 4 singles, sophomore Nora Quintal picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win over Nurmi. Freshman Jennifer Ryba capped the evening with her own victory at No. 6 singles as she defeated Gleisy Torres Torres 6-2, 7-5.
New Mexico returns home for its last three non-conference matches of the season. The Lobos play host March 11-13 at the Lobo Tennis Club to New Mexico State, Tulsa and Sacramento State.
