DENVER, COLO.- In a late match Saturday night against No. 63 University of Denver, the No. 31 University of New Mexico women’s tennis team was defeated 5-2 at Denver’s Monaco Athletic Club in Denver, Colo. The Lobos dropped to 5-6 while central region competitor Denver improved to 8-2.
The Pioneers were apparently prepared to make their first home match of the season a victory as they stole the doubles point from New Mexico with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots and ripped through the singles portion with a vengeance, winning four of the six matches played.
Sophomores Iva Gersic and Nora Quintal were UNM’s two points on the scoreboard. Gersic defeated Suzana Maksovic at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 while Quintal handled Jenny Trettin at the No. 4 position in a quick 6-1, 6-1 match. Quintal also saw a victory at No. 3 doubles with teammate Lucy Scott as the duo downed Denver’s Rachel Sackmaster and Crystal Knysh 9-7.
New Mexico will try to pull one win out of its weekend trip to Colorado as it takes on No. 54 Colorado University in Boulder, Colo. later today at 2 p.m.
