New Mexico won its sixth-straight game and has captured nine of 10 since senior All-America candidate Danny Granger returned to the lineup on Jan. 29 against UNLV…the Lobos are 23-3 with Granger in the lineup, 10-1 in MWC games, with the only losses coming at Oregon, at home to 5th-ranked Wake Forest and at Wyoming…UNM has lost just once since Dec. 22 with Granger playing, a record of 13-1.
The victory also gives the Lobos 6 straight conference wins and 10 total for the first time in seven years, since the 1997-98 squad finished 11-5 in the Mountain Division of the Western Athletic Conference…the Lobos are 18-1 in The Pit this year and have won nine-straight at home since Dec. 28…nationally-ranked Wake Forest is the only team to leave Albuquerque with a win this year.
The Lobos have won 18 of 20 over Colorado State since 1994 and are 33-3 all-time against CSU in The Pit…the Rams fell to 0-12 on the road this year.
UNM won for the first time in six tries when trailing at halftime…Colorado State led 38-33 at the half, marking the first time in six games this season that New Mexico trailed at the break…UNM last faced a halftime deficit at Wyoming, falling behind 39-32 in a game the Cowboys eventually won 81-71… before tonight, nationally-ranked Wake Forest was the only other team to lead at halftime in The Pit this year (36-33).
Colorado State’s 38 points where the most New Mexico has allowed in the first half at home this season…CSU hit nine of its final 11 FG attempts to finish 13-20 (65%) from the floor in the opening period…the Lobos jumped out to a 22-16 lead at the 8:13 mark, but were outscored 22-11 the rest of the half.
CSU led by seven, 40-33, at the 19:25 mark of the second half, but were outscored 29-6 over the next 13 minutes…New Mexico held the Rams scoreless for a span of 9:14 when the Lobo run was 17-0…CSU committed 10 turnovers during that drought…Colorado State’s 23 points in the second half were the fewest by a Lobo opponent since San Francisco State managed just 23 in the 2003-04 season-opener.
New Mexico’s 19 steals are the most ever by UNM in a conference game and the 4th most in any game in school history…the school record is 25 against Western New Mexico in 1990…the Lobos swiped 12 in second half alone tonight.
The Rams’ 24 turnovers were the most by a UNM opponent this season…CSU had 16 in the second half, which New Mexico converted into 14 points.
Tonight’s attendance was 18,018 – New Mexico’s second sell-out of the season…The Pit was also full for the Lobos’ loss to nationally-ranked Wake Forest.
Troy DeVries has made 86 three-pointers this season, No. 6 on UNM’s single-season list. He has 140 for his career, tying Ike Williams for 9th all-time.
