Las Vegas, Nev.- The final day of the UNLV Invite left the No. 30 University of New Mexico women’s tennis team in fourth place after falling in another close 4-3 match against No. 21 Fresno State.

The Lobos (5-5) won their third doubles point of the weekend with wins coming at the No. 2 and 3 spots. At No. 3 doubles, Lobo players Nora Quintal and Lucy Scott endured an intense two-hour match and came out victorious with a 9-7 win over Fadzai Masiyazi and Jacqui Haskett.

Junior Maja Kovacek was dealing with an old back injury that was aggravated in Saturday’s match against No. 15 Tulane. Without being able to offer her usual explosive serves, Kovacek struggled in her matches at No. 1 doubles and singles. New Mexico’s singles wins came at the No. 2 and 5 spots where sophomore Iva Gersic notched a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lucia Tallo and freshman Lucy Scott provided the third and final point with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Jacqui Haskett.

Fresno State capitalized at the No. 1, 3, 4 and 6 singles spots to put the Lobos away and to claim third place honors at the invite. In the championship match, Tulane claimed the entire tournament as it defeated host UNLV.

The Lobos continue their swing of road matches next weekend as they travel to Colorado for duals against central region competitors Denver and Colorado University.
