Las Vegas, Nev.- The No. 30 University of New Mexico women’s tennis team handled its first round match today at the UNLV Invitational, defeating Texas Tech 5-2 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev. The Lobos improve to 5-3 on the season while the Red Raiders drop to 0-5.

New Mexico earned the doubles point after taking matches at the No. 1 and 2 spots. With the win at No. 1 doubles, the 5th-nationally ranked duo of Maja Kovacek and Iva Gersic collected their 20th win of the 2004-05 season. The tandem is currently 20-4 overall in doubles, 7-1 in spring play.

In singles action, the Lobos won four of six matches to clinch today’s victory. At the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions, Lobo players Kovacek, Gersic and Michelle Heidbrink each won their matches in two sets while Mountain West Conference Player of the Week Nora Quintal had to battle in three sets at No. 4 singles to claim winner of her match against Texas Tech’s Erin Hunter.

The Lobos are back in action tomorrow at the UNLV Invite as they face No. 15 Tulane in the winner’s bracket at 11 a.m. (MST). At last year’s invite, Tulane came in second place after losing to Fresno State, 4-3.
