HONOLULU, Hawaii – The No. 4 University of New Mexico men’s golf team is tied for first place with UNLV after the first round of the 21-team John Burns Intercollegiate. The Lobos shot an opening round 14-under par 274 on the par-72 6,916-yard Leilhua Golf Course in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Individually, UNM was led by junior Spencer Levin who shot a 7-under par 65 to take the first round lead. Levin won the John Burns Intercollegiate last season and is currently ranked No. 1 by the Golfweek Sagarin Ratings.

Levin, though, was not the only individual to play well as all five players shot even or better. Senior Miguel Griego is tied for third with a 4-under par 68, sophomore Charlie Beljan is tied for 19th after a 2-under par 70, junior Jay Choi is tied for 27th with a 1-under par 71 and junior Mark Anderson is tied for 33rd after an even par 72. Senior Madalitso Muthiya playing as an individual is tied for 49th at 1-over par with a 73.

The John Burns Intercollegiate continues with second round action tomorrow and concludes with the third round on Friday.
