Alfred Neale, a senior forward on the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team, was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week today. A 6-6 senior from Muskogee, Okla., Neale came off the bench to help the Lobos to conference wins over San Diego State (88-71) and Colorado State (55-47) last week.
Neale, the Lobos’ high-flying sixth man, scored a season-high 20 points, on 7-of-8 shooting (4-of-5 on three-pointers), and grabbed six rebounds vs. the Aztecs. He followed that performance with 10 points, hitting 3-of-6 shots (2-of-5 from three-point land), and four boards vs. the Rams, as UNM snapped a 22-game conference road losing streak with its victory.
For the week, Neale averaged 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists, while shooting 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the field, .600 percent (6-of-10) from three-point range and 1.000 percent (4-of-4) from the free-throw stripe.
This season, Neale is averaging 9.8 ppg and 4.5 rpg. He has come off the bench in 19 of the Lobos’ 22 games and has scored in double figures in each of the last four games. Neale joins senior Danny Granger (Dec. 20) and junior Mark Walters (Nov. 22) as the other Lobos who have earned MWC Player of the Week honors this season.
