PALOS VERDES, Calif. — The No. 8 New Mexico women’s golf team is in seventh place after shooting a 19-over 303 in the first round of the 2005 Regional Challenge Monday afternoon. No. 3 UCLA leads the 14-team field, which features 13 teams ranked in the top 25, with a 5-over 289.

Senior Kailin Downs led the Lobos with a 1-over 72, including four birdies, to stand in a tie for fifth place going into round two. She is four shots back of Duke’s Brittany Lang for the overall lead.

Redshirt freshman Giselle Claux fired a 3-over 74 and is in a tie for 19th place, while sophomore Ashley Rollins carded a 6-over 77 and is in a tie for 41st place.

Junior Christine Fernandez shot a 79 (+8) and senior Christina Spence shot an 81 (+10) for the Lobos to stand in 56th and 68th place, respectively.
