Lobos Roast Wolverines With 69-29 Win

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Ten players got in the scoring column, including a season-high 12 points from Julie Briody, as the New Mexico women’s basketball team trounced Utah Valley State, 69-29, before 8,990 at The Pit Thursday night in the Lobos’ final non-conference game of the season. The Lobos open Mountain West Conference action Saturday, Jan. 15 vs. Air Force at The Pit, beginning at 2 p.m.

Junior Jana Francis also chipped in 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting for the Lobos, who improved to 11-2 for the season. Dionne Marsh scored nine points, Abbie Letz poured in eight, and Wande Olude scored a career-high seven.

New Mexico played stifling defense, holding Utah Valley State (2-15) to 29 points on 30-percent shooting (13-of-43), including 13-percent (2-of-15) from 3-point range. UNM also forced 19 turnovers. It marks the seventh time this season UNM has limited an opponent to less than 50 points, and the third time it has allowed less than 30 points.

Senior Mandi Moore grabbed six rebounds in the game, and in doing so became the first player in UNM women’s basketball history to record 500 rebounds and 500 assists in a career. She is also the only player in school history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists.

The Lobos finished the game shooting 46 percent from the floor, but even more impressive was their performance at the free-throw line. The Lobos netted 11-of-13 attempts at the charity stripe, good for 85 percent.

UNM outscored UVSU 20-0 on second-chance points and 12-0 on fast-break points.

Katie Wilson led Utah Valley State with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting and five rebounds.

The Lobos went into halftime with a commanding 30-13 lead. UNM shot 44 percent from the field (12-of-27) in the first half while limiting the Wolverines to 25-percent shooting (6-of-24).
