New Mexico lost its first home game of the season to Wake Forest 81-64, snapping UNM’s 6-game winning streak …the Lobos fall to 10-2 on the season, while Wake improves to 10-1…the loss is only the third in the last 25 games at The Pit and ends a nine-game home winning streak at The Pit…Wake is now 3-1 against UNM and 1-1 in Albuquerque…the 17-point margin of victory is the largest in the series as the previous three games have been decided by 9 points or less.
UNM trailed at the half for the first time this season at 36-33…the Lobos’ average halftime lead coming into tonight was 11.8 points…last season’s game was also 3 points at the half with Wake leading 28-25.
The first half saw four lead changes and two ties…Wake went on an 11-0 run to turn a 5-3 game into a 14-5 lead…New Mexico trailed throughout most of the first but took a 22-21 lead at the 6:50 mark…Wake regained the lead at 6:17 and led the rest of the game…UNM did not hit a field goal the last 5:01 of the first half but did hit free throws to keep the game at 3 at half…the Lobos cut Wake’s lead to one twice in the second half at 36-35 and 40-39, while the Demon Deacons largest lead was 17 points.
New Mexico was outrebounded for only the second time this season as Wake won the battle of the boards 47-34…Wake is now 8-0 on the season when outrebounding its opponents…the only other time UNM was outrebounded was by New Mexico State (32-24) on Dec. 1, a game the Lobos won 99-80.
The Lobos shot a season low 32.8 percent (20-61) from the field and 18.5 percent (5-27) from the 3-point line…that’s the lowest 3-point accuracy since Feb. 22, 2003 when UNM was 2-20 (10%) at UNLV…tonight, New Mexico missed 15 straight 3s, the last 4 of the 1st half and the first 11 of the 2nd half
UNM’s previous low for FG% this season was 39.7 percent (25-63) overall and 24.1 percent (7-29) from 3-point in a 79-75 loss at Oregon.
The Lobos started 2-8 from the floor in the 1st half and 2-9 to start the 2nd half.
New Mexico entered the game with fourth best field goal percentage in the country at 52.7 percent…Wake improves to 10-0 on the season when holding opponents under 50 percent field goal percentage…the only Wake opponent to shoot over 50 percent was Illinois as they shot 55.9 percent.
New Mexico had its lowest point output of the season with 64 points…the Lobos also allowed their highest point total of 81 by Wake.
Tyron Downey of Wake Forest scored a season-high 16 points on 6-11 shooting…Downey was joined by Chris Paul and Justin Gray in double-figures…Paul led all Wake Forest players with 23 points to go with 7 rebounds and 5 assists to follow up his 23 point effort against Texas…Gray had 12 of his 17 points in the second half including an 8-2 run of his own to make it 61-51.
Danny Granger led New Mexico with a season-high tying 24 points to go along with 9 rebounds and 4 blocks…Granger hit a season-high 13 free throws going 13-15 from the line…entering the contest Granger was shooting 72.0 percent…Granger was joined by Alfred Neal with 13 points as the only two players in double figures.
Tonight’s game was a sellout crowd of 18,018, the first sellout since last year’s game against Air Force.
