University of New Mexico senior Danny Granger was named Mountain West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Lobos to a 77-58, win over Tennessee in The Pit on Saturday, December 18. This is his first player of the week award of the season and the third of his career.
Granger, a Metairie, La., native, has led UNM to a 10-1 record on the season, the best start to the season since the 2000-01 team also began 10-1. He had 17 second-half points to help UNM hold off Tennessee. After the Volunteers cut a 12-point UNM lead to just four (38-34) with under 13 minutes remaining, Granger sparked a 12-2 run with seven points to extend the Lobos’ lead to 50-36. Granger scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the final 12 minutes of the game. Overall, Granger was 6-of-11 from the field, 2-of-5 from the three-point line and 6-of-9 from the free throw line. He also tallied four rebounds, two assists, three blocks and three steals vs. Tennessee.
