The University of New Mexico will play host to their second ranked opponent of the season, No. 23 Arizona State on Saturday afternoon. The Lobos bring a 6-1 record into the contest, while the Sun Devils are 7-1 on the season. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. (MST) on Saturday at The Pit and can be heard live on 610 AM The Sports Animal.
TODAY’S GAME:Today’s game features the Lobos of the University of New Mexico against the Sun Devils of Arizona State University in a non-conference matchup.
SCOUTING THE LOBOS:The Lobos enter today’s game with a 6-1 record with a loss to No. 7 Texas (75-56) and wins at New Mexico State (57-44) and Oklahoma State (60-56) and home wins over Missouri (67-58), Gonzaga (76-54), Bowling Green (73-43) and San Diego (58-50). New Mexico’s leading scorer on the season is senior Lindsey Arndt at 11.7 ppg. with sophomore Katie Montgomery following at 9.1 ppg. Arndt also leads the Lobos in rebounding at 6.9 rpg. and senior Mandi Moore leads UNM in assists at 7.4 apg.
SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE:Arizona State comes into today’s contest ranked 23rd in the AP Poll and 25th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. ASU is 7-1 with wins over Virginia (60-50), San Diego (70-45), Seton Hall (73-53), Prarie View A&M (102-30), Alabama State (71-31), Gonzaga (77-58) and No. 11 Georgia (67-57), with their lone loss coming to No. 1 LSU (65-54). The Sun Devils are led in scoring by Kylan Loney at 13.8 ppg, followed by Kristen Kovesdy at 11.3 ppg. Carrie Buckner leads ASU on the glass with 4.1 rpg, while Amy Denson leads them in assists at 3.1 apg.
THE COACHES:UNM is led by head coach Don Flanagan who is in his 10th season at New Mexico. Flanagan is 197-90 at UNM. Arizona State is led by Charli Turner Thorne who is in her ninth year at ASU and 11th season overall. Thorne is 130-113 at ASU and 170-153 overall.
