Maddox Powers Lobos Past San Diego In Lobo Shootout Championship Game

Albuquerque, N.M.– Sophomore guard Fatima Maddox scored a career high 17 points over the final 21 minutes to spark the University of New Mexico to a 58-50 come-from-behind victory over San Diego tonight in the championship game of the Southwest Airlines Lobo Shootout. New Mexico (6-1) trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half and was down eight at halftime, matching its largest deficit of the season.

UNM scored the first nine points of the second half to take a 27-26 lead at the 16:18 mark. San Diego (4-5) responded with a 8-0 burst of its own over the next three minutes as the two teams battled back and forth for the first 14 minutes of the second period.

The Lobos pulled away over the final six minutes, outscoring the Toreros 12-4. Maddox scored six points in the decisive run while UNM limited San Diego to two field goals.

New Mexico increased its defensive pressure in the second half limiting the Toreros to 11-34 (32.4%) shooting, including just 2-8 from three-point range. USD shot 45 percent (9-20) in the first half, hitting 6-9 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Lobos went to the free throw line 17 times, connecting on 12 in the final 20 minutes. San Diego was 2-4 from the free throw line, all coming in the first half.

UNM leading scorer Lindsey Arndt had 15 points and eight rebounds and won tournament MVP honors. USD leading scorer Amber Sprague was held to eight points on 4-16 shooting. Lobo point guard Mandi Moore had seven points, eight rebounds, and a season high10 assists, earning a spot on the all-tournament team as well.

New Mexico returns to action at home on Dec. 18 against nationally ranked Arizona State. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
