New Mexico defeated Northern Colorado, 86-52, Thursday night at The Pit for its fourth consecutive victory…the Lobos improve to 8-1 for the season, while the Bears fall to 2-8…UNM now leads the all-time series, 4-0.
UNM’s 8-1 start is the best since the 2000-01 team began 10-1.
The Lobos shot 51.7% from the field (31-of-60) and are now shooting 53.4% for the season…the Lobos have shot at least 51% from the floor in every home game this season….UNM shot 59.4% in the second half (19-of-32).
New Mexico held Northern Colorado to 52 points on 36.4% shooting (20-of-55)…the 52 points are the fewest the Lobos have allowed this season.
UNM opened the second half with a 15-0 run in the first 3:26, building a 49-25 advantage…the Lobos hit their first six shots of the second half during that 15-0 spurt…in the first five minutes of the second half, UNM outscored UNC 23-3.
The Lobos led at the half, 34-25…the Lobos have led at the half of every game this season…UNM’s average lead at halftime is 13 points (41.7 to 28.7).
Senior Danny Granger collected his 23rd career double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds…it’s Granger’s 5th d-d of the season and 12th as a Lobo….he hit 9-of-10 free throws, establishing a new season high for FTs made…it’s his fourth straight game with 20-plus points…he’s had a double-double in four of his last five games…he netted 14 points in the first half and was 8-of-9 from the charity stripe…he scored 12 straight points during one stretch, the last 8 of the 1st half and the first 4 of the 2nd period…after the Bears cut the lead to four points at 19-15, Granger scored 16 of UNM’s next 19 points in building a 40-25 lead.
Granger also had 5 steals, giving him 27 for the season, an average of 3 per game.
Junior David Chiotti tallied the fourth double-double of his career with 14 points and 11 rebounds…it’s the first double-double of the season for Chiotti…the 11 rebounds tie a career high for Chiotti…he grabbed eight in the first half
Kris Collins tied a career-high with 6 assists.
Ritchie McKay continued his best start in nine seasons as a head coach…McKay is now 32-33 at UNM.
