ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Junior Maja Kovacek and sophomore Iva Gersic fell in the opening round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championships this morning at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center. The 11th-ranked Lobo tandem suffered the 8-3 upset by 28th-ranked Audrey Banada and Megan Bradley of Miami.
The loss drops the Lobo pair into the consolation bracket which will be announced later this evening. The women’s consolation matches will play immediately following the men, who play at 8:30 a.m. ET.
This week’s event, which concludes Sunday, is the second of three national tournaments during the 2004-05 collegiate tennis season. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships were inaugurated in 1978 for the men and 1984 for the women.
