ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –
New Mexico senior Kailin Downs was named Mountain West Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month for October after posting a 71.5 stroke average in two tournaments.
Downs tied for 18th at the Stanford Intercollegiate Oct. 15-17 at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif., after carding an 8-over 218 (75-69-74) on the par 72, 5,853-yard course. As a team, New Mexico placed seventh in a field of 18 that included nine of the top 25 teams in the country.
In her second tournament appearance of the month, Downs posted a career-low 5-under 211 (73-67-71) en route to a second place finish at the Landfall Tradition held at the Country Club of Landfall, Jack Nicklaus Course, in Wilmington, N.C. It was the 14th career top-five finish for Downs, while her second-round 67 on the par 72, 6,034-yard course was a single-round best for the fall season. The Lobos also won the team title in the 12-team field.
This marks the seventh time Downs has been named Mountain West Golfer of the Month during her career. Downs, who won September Golfer of the Month honors earlier this year, won the award once her freshman season, twice her sophomore season and twice last season. The Bend, Ore., native leads the Mountain West with a 71.92 scoring average and is ranked 12th in the nation by Golfweek.
