Lobos Hold On For 60-56 Win At Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 60-56 win over Oklahoma State at the Gallagher-Iba Arena tonight. The Lobos continue to make each game a team effort as 10 of the 12 players who saw action tonight scored.
Leading the Lobos, sophomore guard Katie Montgomery and freshman forward Dionne Marsh scored nine points. Senior center Jenny Shetters netted eight points while senior guard Mandi Moore chipped in seven. Senior forward Lindsey Arndt grabbed a team-high six rebounds to go along with her six points. Taleesha Conder led the Cowgirls with 18 points.
The Lobos started the game slow but quickly warmed up with 14-4 run sparked by Moore’s three at the 13:50 mark. The Cowgirls fought hard and cut the lead to two three times but could never even things up, trailing 35-31 at the half.
Fueled by Conder, Oklahoma State came out of the lockerrooms and cut the lead to one just three minutes into the second half. A pair of free throws by Shetters and a three pointer by Montgomery pushed the lead back to six with 15 minutes remaining. From that point on, the Lobos managed to fend off the Cowgirls and hold on for the win.
OSU outshot the Lobos for the game going 20-46 (43.5 percent) from the field compared to the Lobos 39.1 percent (18-46). The Cowgirls outrebounded the Lobos 30-28 but the Lobos forced more turnovers, causing 27.
The Lobos return home to host the Airport University Inn Thanksgiving Tournament Friday, Nov. 26-27. New Mexico opens with Missouri at 8 p.m. Other participating teams are Providence and Gonzaga.
