Lobos Take 17th Straight Over Aggies Behind 57-44 Win

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team opened its 2004-2005 season with a 57-44 win over in-state rival New Mexico State. It was the Lobos’ 17th consecutive win over the Aggies and the second consecutive year the Lobos started the season 1-0.
Sophomore Katie Montgomery came off the bench to lead the Lobos with 14 points, including a 4-7 effort from behind the arc. Monique Bribiescas led the Aggies with 19 points in a losing effort.
The Lobos (1-0) came out of the gate running to a 6-0 lead thanks to sophomore Fatima Maddox’s two lay-ups and two free throws by junior Abbie Letz. New Mexico State battled back and hung tough with the Lobos for the remainder of the half. Bribiescas had 18 points in the first half to give NMSU a 29-27 lead going into the locker room.
The Lobos started the second half on fire with a 17-0 run that included three three-pointers from Montgomery. The Nex Mexico defense, led by junior Judy Vogt, held the Aggies scoreless for the first nine minutes. From that point on, New Mexico State could not cut the lead to less the 11.
Letz chipped in 11 while grabbing a team-high nine boards. Senior Lindsey Arndt added six points and eight rebounds. Senior Mandi Moore netted four points and dished out a team-high six assists.
The Lobos continue their road trip as they travel to Stillwater, Okla. for a 7:30 p.m. (C.S.T.) game with Oklahoma State.
