The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced its end of the year awards and all-conference teams for the 2004 season today and New Mexico’s Jeff Rowland and Andrew Boyens were voted co-Players of the Year. Rowland, a junior forward from Albuquerque, led the MPSF in scoring with 18 goals and five assists. Boyens is a sophomore defender from Dunedin, New Zealand, and led the Lobo backline to school-record 11 shutouts and a league-leading 0.54 goals-against-average. Boyens, a transfer from Otago University in New Zealand, was also named the Federation’s Newcomer of the Year.
Junior midfielder Lance Watson and senior goalkeeper Andrew Weber joined Boyens and Rowland on the all-MPSF 1st team. Junior midfielder Brandon Moss was named to the 2nd Team all-MPSF, while junior Ben Ashwill and seniors Hans Bevers and Jeff Krause earned honorable mention all-MPSF honors. New Mexico’s eight players on the all-MPSF team is a school record.
Rowland and Boyens are the first conference players of the year in school history. Former Lobo Edmundo Rodriguez (1991-92) was named the MPSF Mountain Division MVP in 1992. Weber makes his second appearance on the first team and his third honor overall. He was a 1st team member following his sophomore season and a second team member last year. Watson also makes his third appearance on the all-MPSF team, his first time on the 1st Team after being a second team member for his first two years at UNM. Moss and Ashwill both make their third consecutive appearances on the all-MPSF team. Moss was a first team member as a sophomore and a member of the second team as a freshman. Ashwill earned 1st Team honors following his freshman season and honorable mention last year. Both Krause and Bevers were honored for the first time in their careers.
