Nov. 15, 2004
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It was a complete team effort Monday night in the New Mexico women’s basketball team’s final exhibition game as the Lobos downed the NWBL Elite, 72-57. Fourteen Lobos saw action with 12 logging at least two points. Three UNM players racked up double figures led by sophomore guard Katie Montgomery’s 16 points.
While it wasn’t the prettiest game to grace The Pit’s floor, the Lobo defense was as strong as ever forcing 24 turnovers. The Lobos held the Elite to 37.5 percent shooting (24-for-64) and just 16.7 percent from behind the arc for the game. The Lobos offense was shot 42 percent but struggled from afar, making only three of 17 three-pointers attempted.
New Mexico used a trio of tiny runs to build a 16-point lead going into the lockerroom at the half. New Mexico’s first run started at the 12:20 mark as junior guard Judy Vogt came off the bench to net a quick jumper from just inside the arc. The Lobos scored the next seven points over a minute and a half span to take an eight-point lead. The final run of the first half, sparked by sophomore guard Katie Montgomery with just over four minutes remaining, helped push the Lobos to their 16-point lead.
Junior Jana Francis was the team’s second highest scorer on the night, racking up 11 points. Senior Jenny Shetters chipped in 10. Senior Mandi Moore dished out a team-high nine assists while junior Abbie Letz grabbed a team-high seven boards.
New Mexico starts its season on the road for the first time in two years as the Lobos travel to Las Cruces, N.M. on Saturday, Nov. 20. Tip-off from New Mexico State is slated for 7 p.m. The game will be televised live from the Pan American Center on the WB, channel 19.
