In the third meeting between the two schools, New Mexico defeated Duquesne, 82-74, before 11,317 at The Pit Sunday in the third and final night of the NABC Classic…UNM now holds a 2-1 advantage in the series…the Lobos finished the NABC Classic with a perfect 3-0 record, while Duquesne went 1-2…Santa Clara defeated North Carolina A&T in the first game of the day, 90-52…the Broncos went 2-1 in the tournament, while the Aggies went 0-3.
The Lobos’ 3-0 start is the best since UNM started 8-0 in the 1998-99 season.
The Lobos had five players score in double-figures (Mark Walters, Kris Collins, Alfred Neale, Danny Granger and David Chiotti) for the first time since Dec. 6, 2002 against IPFW, when the Lobos also had five players score in double-figures in a 91-66 win at The Pit …the only other player to score in tonight’s game was Troy DeVries, who had three points, all from the free-throw line.
The Lobos shot 51 from the field (24-for-47)…they have shot over 50 percent in each of their first three games.
Junior Mark Walters tied for the team lead with 19 points…he went 7-for-10 from the field for the second straight night…Walters, who scored 19 points last night, has now scored in double-figures in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2002-03 season, when he scored in double-figures the last three games of the season…he connected on his first six shots, including three 3-pointers…he was 5-for-5 from the floor with two 3’s and 12 points in the first half.
Senior Alfred Neale scored a season-high 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting…he hit all four of his 3-point attempts of the game, which makes it eight consecutive 3’s including last night’s 4-for-4 effort from 3-point land against Santa Clara.
Senior Danny Granger finished the game with 14 points and eight rebounds…he was 7-of-13 from the free-throw line…he was held without a field goal until the 14:49 mark of the second half when he hit a 3…he was held to just four points on 0-of-4 shooting in the first half
Junior Kris Collins scored a season-high 19 points…he was 5-of-9 from the field and 9-of-12 from the charity stripe.
The Lobos went on a 13-2 run from the 12:35 mark to the 8:15 mark in the first half to open up a nine-point lead (22-13)…Duquesne closed the gap to four points at 35-31 going into halftime…the Lobos led by as many as 12 points in the second half at the 1:47 mark (72-60)
