The 12th-ranked New Mexico women’s golf team began action Sunday afternoon at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship. The tournament features 16 teams in a double-elimination bracket. The Lobos, seeded seventh in the bracket, fell to 10th-seeded Florida, 3-2, in first-round action. After falling to the Gators, the Lobos went to the consolation bracket, and lead 15th-seeded North Carolina 4-1 thru 10 holes.
The Gators edged the Lobos by winning three of the five matches. Kailin Downs defeated Sandra Gal, 3 and 2, and Giselle Claux topped Tarah McNaughton, 4 and 3, for the two Lobo victories. Ashley Rollins fell 5 and 4 to Tiffany Chudy, Christina Spence lost to Whitney Myers, 2 up, and Christina Fernandez fell to Andrea VanderLende, 1 up.
While the Lobos fell to Florida, they are leading the Tar Heels of North Carolina, 4-1, thru 10 holes. The competition will resume Monday morning. Live stats of all matches are available at www.GolfStat.com.
