In the sixth meeting between the two schools, New Mexico defeated Santa Clara, 93-59, before 12,608 at The Pit Saturday in the second night of the NABC Classic…the Lobos now hold a 4-2 all-time lead in the series.
The Lobos set a school record with 20 3-pointers in the game…the previous record was 18…UNM hit 18 3’s against Holy Cross Dec. 29, 1997 and against UTEP Feb. 21, 1998… the Lobos shot 57 percent (20-for-35) for the game from 3-point range…the 20 3’s are also the most Santa Clara has allowed in school history, while the 35 attempts are the third most Santa Clara has given up in school history…UNM canned 13 3-pointers in the first half…UNM shot 65 percent from behind the arc in the first half (13-for-20)…UNM hit five 3-pointers in the first six minutes…the Lobos hit six of their first eight 3-point attempts… UNM only hit three 3-pointers in the first game against North Carolina A&T last night and attempted just 10 3’s, a low for UNM in the Ritchie McKay era.
While the Lobos hit 20 3’s, Santa Clara was just 2-of-14 from the 3-point line.
The 34-point margin was the eighth-worst defeat in Santa Clara history.
UNM went on a 23-6 run in the last eight minutes of the first half, including a 12-0 run the last two minutes to go up 46-23 at the break…UNM hit four 3-pointers in the last 1:30 of the first half, including two in the last 10 seconds…New Mexico opened the second half on a 16-4 run in the first 4:30 to take a 62-27 lead…the Lobos led by as many as 38 points (78-40) in the second half at the 7:30 mark.
Junior Mark Walters made a career-high four 3-pointers… his previous high was three, which he did twice…he finished the game with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-7 from 3-point land…it was the most points for Walters since he scored 23 at Air Force on March 8, 2003…he was 4-of-5 from the floor with 10 points and two 3’s in the first 12 minutes of the game….he closed the first half with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
Senior Danny Granger set career-highs in 3-pointers (5) and 3-point attempts (6)…he recorded his seventh double-double as a Lobo with 18 points and 10 rebounds…scored 12 points in the first half on four 3-pointers
Alfred Neale was a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range…he finished the game 6-of-7 from the field for 16 points…he had two dunks to up his season total to three.
