TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of New Mexico softball team improved its record to 4-1 on the season with a 7-6 win over the Hum Babe Cats in eight innings at the University of Arizona Tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
UNM built a 2-0 lead going into the fourth inning on a pair of RBIs from junior Ashley Shartzer. The Babe Cats pushed back, taking a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth after a four-run inning in the fourth. New Mexico put three runs on the board in the sixth including a solo homer from senior Cassie Chavez.
Both teams were knotted up at six all in extra innings when freshman Ashley Allen was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded, scoring junior Kristina Schmallen.
Shartzer and Chavez led the Lobos offensively going 2-4 at the plate. Senior Ashley Perkins got the win improving to a perfect 3-0 on the season.
